Reversible ectopic soft tissue ossification following measles encephalomyelitis.
For many years it has been recognized that changes may take place in the skeletal bony and soft tissues in paraplegic patients. Madame Dejerine and her co-workers described such changes in 1918 and 1919 (Dejerine and Ceillier, 1918; D1jerine, Ceillier and Dejerine, 1919). War injuries, road and industrial accidents have been responsible for an increased number of paraplegic patients, many of wh...
متن کاملFamilial ectopic ossification.
We report a family with dominantly inherited ectopic ossification. It is characterised by childhood onset of multifocal subcutaneous ossifications (primary osteoma cutis), which are of trivial clinical significance. One family member had extensive ectopic ossification involving one limb. We speculate that this may reflect somatic mutation having caused conversion to homozygosity.
متن کاملEctopic ossification in tuberculous meningitis.
The syndrome of severe wasting, opisthotonus and paraplegia in flexion associated with considerable hydrocephalus is well known to those treating advanced cases of tuberculous meningitis. Once such a condition has developed, the outlook is generally poor. Many patients will die and the survivors will often be handicapped by a variety of physical and mental sequelae. The purpose of this paper is...

A significant number and variety of disorders cause extraskeletal deposition of calcium and phosphate (Table 1). In some, mineral is precipitated as amorphous calcium phosphate or as crystals of hydroxyapatite; in others, osseous tissue is formed. The pathogenesis of ectopic mineralization is generally attributed to one of three mechanisms (Table 1). First, a supranormal “calcium-phosphate solu...
متن کاملA 'Y-shaped' soft tissue ossification in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.
A 16-year-old girl developed multiple painful and tender soft tissue swellings over her neck, trunk and extremities since 2 years of age. These swellings appeared spontaneously or after trivial injury and either used to resolve spontaneously or they ossified into mature bone. These flares of heterotopic ossification resulted in gradual restriction of movements of neck, trunk, shoulder, elbow, h...
